Mid Island Y JCC Capital Campagn Launch

MID-ISLAND Y JCC KICKS-OFF ITS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

On Sunday, November 20, 2011, the Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center at 45 Manetto Hill Road in Plainview announced the kick-off of its Capital Campaign and unveiled its plan to renovate and refurbish the  JCC. Staff and board members were on-hand to share their vision for the future with members, supporters and friends; a vision that would not be possible without the support of the entire community.

For more than 50 years, the Mid-Island Y JCC has stood as the center of the Jewish community.  Thousands of people, from infants through seniors, participate in Mid Island's various programs and benefit from its services each year, regardless of members' ability to pay.  However, the JCC is at a critical juncture in its history.  In urgent need to renovate and expand its aging home, the JCC will better serve the community – today, tomorrow and for future generations.

To meet these needs, the JCC has embarked on a capital campaign.  A campaign that will:

  • Expand its Fitness Center
  • Create new spin and aerobic rooms
  • Renovate its locker rooms, lobby, Early Childhood wing and classrooms, as well as auditorium
  • Resurface its parking lot
  • Repair its roof
  • Procure new buses and more

To date, the board has raised an impressive $1.5 million toward the agency’s goal of $5 million which will provide the community with a state-of the-art facility that matches all the wonderful programming brought to the community each day.

Mid Island Y JCC encourages residents to become involved whether it is being a volunteer, attending one of its upcoming parlor meetings or becoming a donor.  With the help of the community, it has no doubt that it will be successful in securing the future of the JCC.

The Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center, established in 1956, serves Nassau and western Suffolk Counties. More than 12,000 members and patrons benefit from the human services provided by the Mid-Island Y JCC. The Center is a UJA-Federation agency and also affiliated with the United Way of Long Island and provides more than $225,000 of scholarships to families in need and is a center for personal growth, family strength and community cohesion.

The Center provides a full range of programs from toddler and preschool through senior citizen clubs and activities. It currently offers toddler programs, nursery school, preschool day care, school-age daycare and after-school programs, teen programming, summer day and travel camping, adult education, cultural arts and physical fitness, swimming and recreational athletic programs for all ages, health and fitness programs for people with disabilities and illness, Alzheimer’s respite, bereavement counseling, separation/divorce support center and a full service senior center.

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano recently honored Joseph Vazquez, a Caseworker in the Nassau County Department of Social Services. Mr. Vazquez was honored for his efforts in recognizing evidence in the case of a 4-month old child who was severely burned. He then notified the Nassau County Police Department, and the Special Victims Section launched a criminal investigation, which resulted in the arrest of the child’s mother for intentionally injuring her child.

“On behalf of the 1.3 million residents of Nassau County, I thank Joseph Vazquez for his diligent work in protecting children who are being abused. There is no job with greater purpose, and he is truly an asset to the Department of Social Services.” said County Executive Mangano.

Franklin Square Residents Go Above and Beyond for Athletes

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano thanked Sandi and George Silkes of Franklin Square for their generosity in collecting gifts and prizes for athletes participating in the 2011 Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged.

At the conclusion of the Games each year, the Silkes begin collecting prizes until the day of the Opening Ceremonies the following year. Prizes include stuffed animals, games, electronics, and t-shirts and are paid for entirely out of the Silkes’ personal budget.

“We asked the public to get involved to help keep the Empire State Games alive, and the Silkes came through,” said County Executive Mangano.  “It is because of the support and generosity of people like them that we were able to have a very successful Games this year and I thank the Silkes for their kindness.”

Mangano Announces First Baby of 2011 Saved Under Baby Safe Haven Law in Nassau

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Nassau County Police Safe Haven Coordinator Timothy Jaccard (President of the AMT Children of Hope Foundation/Baby Safe Haven Program) announced on January 25, 2011that Nassau’s first baby of the year was relinquished and brought to Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, New York.

The baby boy was born at approximately 4:30 a.m. on January 25, 2011 and appears to be very healthy.  The mother of the baby contacted the Safe Haven hotline (1-877-796-HOPE) earlier that day and made arrangements to relinquish the baby anonymously.

“The Safe Haven law provides a safe alternative for mothers who are frightened and feel they have nowhere else to turn. The message is simple: if you truly feel that you cannot care for your baby, you have options. Find a Safe Haven location and put your baby into safe and caring arms,” said County Executive Ed Mangano. “Nassau County is committed to the health and welfare of newborns and we are happy to lend our support to this important program.”

New York
law allows a mother who believes she cannot care for her baby to legally leave the newborn at a number of locations, including police precincts, firehouses, hospitals, churches or with any responsible adult willing to accept the baby and call proper authorities. Over the past decade, safe haven laws have been adopted in all 50 states and 2,858 babies have been safely relinquished.

The AMT Children of Hope Foundation was founded in 1998 in response to a number of abandoned, deceased infants discovered in the community. The organization — comprised of members of the Nassau County Police Department, AMTs, local healthcare workers and civilians — provides dignified burials for innocent children lost to unsafe abandonment, and is committed to putting an end to such tragedies.

The AMT Children of Hope Foundation operates a 24/7 emergency hotline (1-877-796-HOPE) to offer assistance to individuals in crisis who are pregnant and have nowhere to turn. In 2009, the hotline received 2,115 calls and in 2010 the hotline received 2,075 calls.  The organization also provides support to prepare parents-to-be to raise their child or make an adoption plan if they choose to; counsels them to share their situation with parents and/or other relatives; and educates them on the Safe Haven law.
